Ariana Grande is most known for her killer vocal ability as well as her roles on hit Nickelodeon shows ‘Victorious’ and her own spin off ‘Sam and Cat’ and her accomplishments don’t stop there. Ariana has gone on to have multiple hit records with ‘The Way’ “Baby I’ and ‘Right There’. While Ariana has turned into a household name she has also grown more into herself, she’s gone from the ‘good girl’ on Nickelodeon to speaking on feminism and why she defines herself as such.
In an interview with POPSUGAR Beauty Ariana is asked about how she labels herself as a feminist and what feminism means to her. She states, “We deserve to be equal, everybody deserves to be equal. It’s a never ending fight, unfortunately it’s been going on for so long and we’ve made less progress… there’s so much work to do still. I think just educating yourself really would be the first step.” Ariana steps so relocating about feminism, she doesn’t bash those who don’t label themselves as such because it’s something that you have to educate yourself on before the word feminist becomes less scary. Ariana goes on to say, “it’s not about being above men it’s about being equal to men.”
Ariana’s view on feminism is spot on, she clearly sees the hierarchy that men are put on in this world and tries to educate herself as well as her fans on feminism and it doesn’t just stop there. Soon after her split with Big Sean Ariana opened up on how she feels about the media constantly questioning the men in her life, she states “I’m not Big Sean’s ex. I’m not Niall [Horan]’s ‘possible new girl. I’m Ariana Grande and if that’s not interesting enough, don’t talk to me.” Ariana expanded on this thought on Twitter, “I can’t wait to live in a world where people are not valued by who they’re dating/married to/attached to, having sex with or seen with but by their value as an individual.” Going through break ups is very hard but it’s especially hard when you have people constantly speculating every move you make and every boy you lay your eyes and Ariana said it perfectly; a woman’s worth is not set by the men she associated herself with but the way she carries herself and the life she has built for herself.
Ariana’s thoughts aren’t limited to just Twitter–in an interview with Power 106 Los Angeles she let her thoughts be known. The male DJ”s asked her about the emoji updates and which were her favorites in which she responded, the unicorn in where the DJ’s posed it as a “girl” thing in where Ariana shut it down, “Many boys use the unicon. You need a little brushing up on equality over here.” Ariana is not here for the heteronormativity in our culture and ended the interview with stating, “I have a long list of thing I’d like to change, I think judgement in general. Intolerance, meanness, double standing, misognyny, racism, sexiam. All that, that’s what we need to focus on. We’ve got work to do.” The way that Ariana is not afraid to let people know that their heteronormative comments are not appreciated and how we as a society need to stop dividing things on gender especially something as trivial as emojis.
Ariana Grande has shown time and time again how feminism is important and there is nothing more admirable than lifting up one another rather than dragging them down. Women are more than just the men they’re associated with and people aren’t limited to the emoji’s they decided to use. We are who we want to be no matter what that is and because of Ariana Grande million of girls as well as boys around the world are able to believe that.
